Community Groups: Mutual Care

Community Groups: Mutual Care
You might have noticed that many of us slip up and call Community Groups “Care Groups.” This is because for many years that’s what we called them - and it’s one of the four main goals of our small group ministry. It’s a place where every member can give and receive care.
Community Groups are the context where we “carry each other’s burdens, and fulfill the law of Christ.” (Gal. 6:2)
It’s a place where we carry out the “one another’s” of Scripture. There are dozens of them, but here are a few to get you started.
- Be of the same mind with one another (Rom. 12:6)
- Accept one another (Rom 15:7)
- Love one another (Jn. 13:24)
- Through love, serve one another (Gal. 5:13)
- Be devoted to one another in love (Rom. 12:10)
- Regard one another as more important than yourselves (Ph. 2:3)
- Bear one another’s burdens. (Gal 6:2)
- Speak truth to one another. (Eph. 4:25)
- Comfort one another (1Th. 4:18)
- Encourage and build up one another (1Th. 5:11)
- Spur one another on to love and good deeds. (Heb. 10:24)
- Pray for one another. (Jas 5:16)
- Be hospitable to one another (1Pe 4:9)
All these things are tough to do on a Sunday morning as we dash in and out. We need a context to put our obedience to these commands into practice. It’s easy to feel left out in a big crowd on Sunday mornings. That’s why we do community groups - to provide every member a chance to get plugged in and receive personal care.
Community groups are where we give and receive care in a variety of ways, including but not limited to:
- Help with moving
- Visits to the hospital
- Meals when you’ve been sick, injured or had a baby
- Baby Showers
- Celebrating birthdays and milestones with friends
- Hanging out during the week: dinners together, going out for coffee, sports events
- Having book groups or Bible studies
- Praying for each other regularly
