Sunday Sermon Recap: Renewing The Covenant
Exodus 34 is about the renewing of God’s covenant with His people.
You can listen to the sermon HERE.
Point 1: Knowing the Name of the Lord
God declares His mercy, grace, patience, steadfast love, faithfulness, and forgiveness to lead the children of Israel to repentance after they broke covenant with Him. He draws their attention away from themselves and back onto Him. In this way, God restores them to proper worship of Him.
Point 2: Believing God’s Promises
Failure to obey God causes vulnerable souls to doubt His promises. In Exodus 34, God promises to “do marvels, such as have not been created in all the earth or in any nation” (verse 10). He assures the Israelites that He will go before them, faithfully protecting and providing for them.
Point 3: Renewing Our Commitment to Walk in His Ways
God restates several of His laws. These demands of the Covenant were of particular challenge to the Israelites. Specifically, God emphasizes
• Community worship (the three feast days),
• Sabbath rest, and
• Giving back to the Lord.
With the lens of the New Testament, we see these laws fulfilled in the person and work of Jesus Christ. And as followers of Christ, we have received His grace which results in a changed life. We respond to Him with joyful obedience in these areas. In doing so, our hearts are renewed, and our faith stays healthy.
Application Question: What is our individual and corporate mission? God calls us to recommit to displaying and sharing the grace of God to others. We are God’s; we belong to Him; we are to be used by Him to do His mission.
