The Trustworthiness of Scripture

The Trustworthiness of Scripture

Josh Blount

Proverbs 30:1-6

Introduction: Scripture is trustworthy because it is God speaking to save His people.  To look at Scripture properly, we must investigate what it says about itself. In doing so, we increase our confidence in it.

 Point 1: What is Scripture?

Scripture is the infinite, limitless God speaking to man who is both finite (v. 1) and limited—limited in perspective and power (v. 4).  Man must look for guidance and direction from Him, our refuge (v. 5b).   All of His words are true (v. 5a), and they must not be altered (v. 6)

Point 2: What is God’s Purpose as He Speaks?

God speaks to save His people.  By creating and setting boundaries through His spoken word (Gen. 1), God does not merely provide us information or an ordinary claim. He provides salvation through the implausible but central mystery of God taking on human form in Jesus.  We must take care not to place our faith in the wrong foundation or to treat Scripture as a “magic handbook” for prosperous living.

Point 3: What is the Proof?

The proof of Scripture is that God is working. With unveiled eyes, a Christian is able to behold the glory of God (2 Cor. 3:18).  And all together, Christians are the Church—further proof that God speaks to save and gather His people (Eph. 3:9-10).

Scripture makes no ordinary claim.  For those who doubt its veracity, ask what Scripture claims to be.  Scripture works, for we see God working individually and corporately as the Church. We are a people brought out of darkness and into His marvelous light (1 Pet. 2:9).
